Where To Stay on Bequia: Best Hotels on the Island

Bequia (pronounced BEK-way) is an island in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines just south of Saint Vincent. It is the second largest of the Grenadines, despite being just 7 square miles.

Bequia is a picturesque island popular with yachters who dock in Admiralty Bay in Port Elizabeth, the island’s capital.

It has a laid-back, charming atmosphere, a postcard-worthy boardwalk along the coast, friendly locals, and idyllic beaches. I enjoyed the beaches on Bequia most and loved the unbelievable sea views we had from our hotel room.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines have been impacted by Hurricane Beryl. Union Island has been mostly destroyed. It may not be possible to visit some of the Grenadines until the end of 2024 or early 2025.

Where to Stay on Bequia: Best Hotels on the Island

As a small island, there is a limited selection of hotels and apartments on Bequia. Some get better reviews than others, and I’ve only included the top-reviewed ones in this guide. The hotel prices on Bequia were surprisingly high, but when there are just a few options, they have a monopoly on accommodations.

Many of the hotels on Bequia have rooms with sea views and are steps away from the beach and restaurants. When you’re visiting Bequia, the best hotel you can stay in is the Bequia Plantation Hotel.

Best Hotel: Bequia Plantation Hotel

We stayed at the Bequia Plantation Hotel and had a lovely time. It’s a luxury, 5-star hotel at the southern end of Admiralty Bay in Port Elizabeth with a range of room options, including bungalows, villas, and honeymoon suites.

Bequia Plantation Hotel is just steps away from the sea and even has its own beach with beach chairs, which are free for hotel guests to use. The hotel staff was friendly and happy to accommodate requests, like storing luggage before check-in and after check-out.

The property is large and stretches along the coast and has perfectly manicured gardens with white plaster statues. It’s a delightfully charming hotel and in my opinion, the best on the island.

Rooms at Bequia Plantation Hotel

You have a selection of different rooms to choose from at Bequia Plantation Hotel. The sea-view rooms in the main house boast some of the best views, while the bungalows, suites, and villas offer a bit more space and privacy.

Main House

Our room on the top floor of the main house was beautiful with the most stunning sea views (if I haven’t mentioned those enough already!). It had a newly remodeled bathroom with high-end fixtures, a comfortable bed, and a large patio with chairs.

Housekeeping came promptly each day as soon as we left so the room was clean and ready when we got back from breakfast and a morning swim.

There is a short staircase you need to go up to reach the rooms without an elevator, but it was not an issue for us since we didn’t have a ton of heavy luggage. If you’d rather avoid stairs, then one of the bungalows or villas is probably the best option for you.

We had a kettle with some tea and coffee, as well as a mini fridge which was great for keeping cold water bottles in when we came back after a day in the hot sun.

Bungalows & Villas

The bungalows and villas are free-standing cottages that do not share walls with other units. They are not connected to the main house, so there is more privacy.

These rooms also have a more studio apartment feel, with a small kitchenette (no stove) with a microwave, sink, small counter, and a mini fridge. You can relax in the seating area, hang out on the deck chairs, or watch TV from bed.

Choose from a sea-view bungalow or a two-bedroom bungalow. It seems that all the bungalows were called villas previously, or vice versa, so you will see the terms used interchangeably. They are the same thing though!

Suites

The suites are even more unique rooms available to book at Bequia Plantation Hotel!

There are a few different types of suites, including Beach Suites steps from the beach, Orchard Suites in the property’s orchard, and spa/honeymoon suites on the outskirts of the property up on a hill with views of the sea below.

Whichever suite you choose, they’re all beautiful and close to the beach since Bequia Plantation Hotel is right on the beach! Treat yourself to a spa/honeymoon suite with your own private pool or one of the beach suites to start and end your day with sea views.

Amenities at Bequia Plantation Hotel

As a 5-star hotel, there are a variety of amenities available to guests. There’s a nice pool, an on-site spa where you can book massages and other treatments, beach chairs and towels that are free for hotel guests to use, and a few common areas around the property to sit and relax.

In the rooms, there are comfy beds and bedding; a kettle with tea, coffee, sugar, etc.; two water bottles delivered to the room each day, and an outdoor area to enjoy the views. While the property is older, they’ve done a good job of keeping it up and some rooms have been remodeled in some areas (like the bathroom in the main house ocean view room we stayed in!).

Restaurant at Bequia Plantation Hotel

One of the conveniences of staying at Bequia Plantation Hotel is their on-site restaurant, which serves breakfast, lunch, happy hour, and dinner daily. As a hotel guest, breakfast is included each day of your stay (except the day you check in).

Overall, we found the food on Bequia to be just okay at most places. The on-site restaurant was pretty good, though some things weren’t great and felt more like resort food vs. local food.

Their fish and chips were great! Barracuda was the catch of the day when I got it and it was the best thing I ate there. The breakfast is the same each day, with pastries, fruit, and a selection of main courses.

They even have a large pizza oven — you need to go to the pizza bar to get pizza made in the oven and it is only available at certain times.

Happy hour takes place every day with a small selection of drinks and light bites available at great prices. Food is expensive in the Grenadines, so any chance to get a more discounted price is ideal!

Best Areas to Stay in Bequia

Bequia is small and you don’t have to go far to find even more hotels that may better suit your needs/preferences. There are hotels throughout the island, but there are two main areas where most visitors stay.

You can use the map below to search for hotels or continue reading for a full list of the best hotels in Bequia! If you cannot see the map, try disabling your ad blocker and refreshing the page.

Port Elizabeth

Locals often say Bequia is one of the most beautiful islands in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Port Elizabeth provided some of the best views we experienced on our trip.

Port Elizabeth is on the west side of Bequia (on the Caribbean Sea side) where all the ferries arrive/depart and where all the yachts and boats anchor. Port Elizabeth is the capital of the island and where the main town of the island is. This is where we stayed, with views of Admiralty Bay, and I would not have wanted to stay anywhere else on Bequia!

Not only is it convenient to be close to the ferry since this is how we arrived and departed the island, but it’s also where most of the restaurants are (most with sea views!) along the boardwalk along the coast.

The town of Port Elizabeth is where you will find the tourism office, the only bank on the island, as well as the only pharmacy on the island. We enjoyed walking the 10 minutes into town from our hotel and seeing the local neighborhoods, shops, and restaurants.

I would highly recommend staying in Port Elizabeth since it is the most convenient and has the most options for restaurants and nice beaches.

Where to Stay in Port Elizabeth

  • Bequia Plantation Hotel: At the far end of the boardwalk from the port, Bequia Plantation Hotel was a delightful stay and the perfect location for our visit to Bequia.

  • Gingerbread Suites: Just down the boardwalk from Bequia Plantation Hotel is Gingerbread Suites. Decorated on the outside to match its name, this charming hotel has just 6 suites with king beds and is steps away from the sea.

  • Tropical Hideaway: A bit further up on the hill from the boardwalk along the coast, Tropical Hideaway has a gorgeous swimming pool and apartments with sweeping views of Admiralty Bay below.

Friendship Bay

On the east side of the island, Friendship Bay is the most popular area to stay. It’s on the Atlantic Ocean side, so the water can be a bit rougher than the Caribbean side. It also is windier, which can help keep you cool on the hot and humid days.

It’s a quieter, less visited area of the island compared to the more lively Port Elizabeth and Admiralty Bay. As such, there are fewer restaurants and accommodations, but you will be more likely to have the beach to yourself.

Where To Stay in Friendship Bay

  • Bequia Beach Hotel: This 5-star, luxury hotel offers a variety of rooms, ranging from studios to large, 8-person villas. Some rooms have terraces overlooking the ocean, while all rooms have A/C.

  • Palm House: For those looking for a home away from home, Palm House is a two-bedroom apartment on a hill with a full kitchen, a private pool, an outdoor dining area, and views of the ocean below.
